The American Classical League was founded in 1919 for the purpose of fostering the study of classical languages in the United States and Canada. Membership is open to any person who is committed to the preservation and advancement of our classical inheritance from Greece and Rome.

The American Classical League includes teachers of Latin, Greek, and Classics on elementary, secondary, and college levels. The League celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2019. 

ACL is a member of national and world-wide organizations that support Classics, Langauge Study or Humanities:
National Humanities Alliance (NHA); Joint National Committee on Languages-National Council for Languages and International Studies (JNCL-NCLIS); American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL); International Federation of Associations of Classical Studies (FIEC).

The benefits of membership in ACL include access to the latest grant information, comprehensive teaching materials, and job placement resources for Classics teachers and teachers of classical studies and Greek and Latin languages in the classroom.

The American Classical League:

• maintains a Teaching Materials and Resource Center which publishes and provides hundreds of teaching aids (20% discount for ACL members).
• publishes the Classical Outlook, the leading publication for teachers of Latin, Greek, and Classical Humanities in the schools and colleges (among the most widely circulated Classics journal in North America); ACL members receive access to archived volumes of The Classical Outlook via JSTOR.
• publishes the American Classical League Newsletter monthly in electronic form to provide information about classical activities.
• maintains a National Committee for Latin and Greek to serve as a liaison between ACL and government agencies and the general public. Check out their website, promotelatin.org
• operates a National Teaching Job Placement Service for elementary and secondary teachers of Latin and Greek languages.
• conducts an annual Institute and Workshops to promote excellence in the teaching of classical studies.
• maintains a Technology committee offering instructional software in the classics.
• awards annual grants to assist the academic pursuits of teachers of the classics in elementary or secondary (these could be for research or travel) schools.
• awards annual grants to prospective teachers studying for certification or licensure in Latin.
• sponsors the National Junior Classical League and the Senior Classical League.
• sponsors the NJCL Latin Honor Society and the NJCL Greek Honor Society.
• sponsors the National Latin, National Greek, National Mythology, and Exploratory Latin Exams and the SCRIBO writing contest.
• provides free webinars for teachers and students on ETC LIVE. 
• supports the teaching of classics at the elementary and middle school level (K-9) with the Excellence Through Classics Committee.
• provides scholarships to teachers of classics for summer travel, for attendance at the Institute and other activities.
